FIRST PATRIA-ASSEMBLED NH90 TAKES OFF

07/13/2005

NHIndustries is proud to announce that the first serial production NH90 assembled outside the NHIndustries community took to the air today at the Patria facility of Halli, Jämsä - Finland.

The flight started at 9:30 and lasted 65 minutes. The NH90 was flown by:
- Didier GUERIN experimental test pilot,
- Nicolas CERTAIN flight test engineer,
- François ROSTAING flight engineer.

The serial production NH90 are mainly born from one of the 3 assembly lines of the NHIndustries Partner Companies community: Cascina Costa in Italy for AgustaWestland, Marignane in France and Donauwörth in Germany for Eurocopter.

KH-202 is the first Finnish NH90 helicopter assembled by Patria, the Finnish Aerospace and Defence Group. Patria, through a subcontract with Eurocopter, in the frame of the main contract offset obligation, is operating the 4th NH90 assembly. The contract calls for a series production of a minimum of 50 helicopters whose main modules are supplied to Patria from NHIndustries Partner Companies.
Locally, the employment effect is approximately 650 man-years. Patria is currently assembling 5 helicopters and deliveries of these 50 NH90 will be completed by 2011.
The first flight of KH-202 occurs after a splicing phase completed in October 2003, the equipment installation during 2004 and system tests started in January 2005.

On 19 October 2001, Finland ordered to NHIndustries 20 NH90 in the Tactical Troop Transport configuration, after a severe competition through the Nordic Standard Helicopter Programme (NSHP). After the usual customer-dedicated equipment integration, KH-202, the Finnish NH90 flying at Marignane from 15 September 2004 and the 18 Finnish NH90 to come will be operated by the Army Aviation of Finland in the Tactical Transport and SAR roles.

With its outstanding original features (full Fly-By-Wire flight control system, full composite crashworthy airframe, full aircraft/avionics/mission system integration…) associated to Rolls-Royce RRTM322-01/9 engines, Finnish NH90 will bring the most reliable heliborne support to Finnish Defence Forces whatever the military operational scenario proposed.

Today, full-scale production is rapidly proceeding with more than 80 NH90 on assembly line in France, Germany, Italy and Finland awaited by the end of this year. The current NH90 logbook shows a total of 357 firm orders, 86 options and 45+ selected NH90, by 13 countries and for 17 Armed Forces.

NHIndustries is responsible for the NH90 programme management, marketing, sales, and after sales support. Production shares of the 3 Partner Companies involved are 32.00% for AgustaWestland – Italy, 62.50% for Eurocopter – France and Germany, and 5.50% for Fokker Aerospace - The Netherlands.

This is the sixth serial production NH90 leaving the ground, following NH90 for Germany, Finland (the first), Italy and Sweden.
On 29 August 2003, Greece ordered 20 NH90 and Logistic Support together with a corresponding offset agreement involving Hellenic Aerospace Industry (HAI).
The 16 NH90 Tactical Transport and 4 NH90 Special Operations helicopters will be operated by the Army Aviation. Both configurations are equipped with Rolls-Royce Turbomeca RTM322-01/9 engines. Also to be noted is that all Hellenic NH90 can be converted into a MEDEVAC variant thanks to 4 role change kits included in the order.
14 optional NH90 are also to be taken into account, consisting of up to 12 Tactical Transport and 2 Special Operation variants.
In addition to the outstanding features common to both Standard Cabin and High Cabin Version of the NH90 (full Fly-By-Wire flight control system, full composite crashworthy airframe, full aircraft/avionics/mission system integration…), the Hellenic NH90 introduces to the world a state-of-the-art Special Operation suite to enhance the capability of the user to support diverse military scenarios.
The delivery of the whole series of 20 Hellenic NH90 will be achieved by the beginning of 2009 as planned, by the beginning of 2011 if the 14 options are confirmed.
By flying this sixth serial production NH90 related to 5 different customers from different natures, NHIndustries demonstrates its comprehensive proficiency in managing the widest multi-national military helicopter programme ever proposed to the most modern Armed Forces in the world.

The contract has been signed in Canberra between the Australian Defence Materiel Organisation and Australian Aerospace, the local fully-owned subsidiary of Eurocopter. According to the Australian AIR9000 programme, the 12 NH90 ordered are identified under the designation “MRH90”, standing for “Multi Role Helicopter”.

Australian Aerospace Chief Executive, Joseph Saporito, said that this MRH90 contract will allow AA together with NHI to inject more than AUD 300 million into Australian industry, making full use of the expertise and local capabilities.

The twin-engine, medium lift MRH90 is the Australian version of the NH90 helicopter provided by the consortium NHIndustries (the Company owned by Agusta (32%), Eurocopter (62,5%), and Stork Fokker (5,5%)). The New Zealand Minister of Defence, Hon. Mark Burton, announced the selection of NHIndustries’ NH90 helicopter as a replacement helicopter for the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

The NH90 fleet will replace the current Royal New Zealand Air Force’s ageing Iroquois.

Further negotiations with NHIndustries will establish the number of helicopters to be pur-chased, cost and delivery date.

“This Government is committed to building a modern, sustainable, well-equipped Defence Force”, said Hon. Mark Burton. “These helicopters will ensure interoperability with our secu-rity partners, allow New Zealand to participate in a range of operations, and to provide valu-able support to land force elements and other agencies.” added the Minister of Defence.

The twin-engine NH90 is the world’s most advanced multi-role helicopter which integrates fly-by-wire technology, along with the latest composite materials to minimize corrosion and maximize survivability and life cycle. The NH90 can carry up from 16 to 20 equipped troops and its versatility makes the NH90 suitable for all types of land and naval missions, such as troop transport, amphibious operations, search and rescue and counter-terrorism.

After the Oman Sultanate’s acquisition of 20 NH90 in July 2004 and the Australian Depart-ment of Defence selection of 12 NH90 (MRH90) in August 2004, New Zealand becomes the 12th country to have chosen the NH90, which is the reference in the medium-size twin class.
